Water & Why You Need It
Water is pretty important to our overall wellness and this is never more true than when you are pregnant. Fun Fact! As much as 60% of the adult body is made up of water. When you take into account that while you are pregnant your blood volume nearly doubles, you are housing your baby in an amniotic fluid filled bubble, and your joints (cushioned by water) are working extra hard because your your growing belly, it is easy to see why drinking enough water during pregnancy is top of the "to do" list!
Most importantly, drinking enough water during pregnancy helps to avoid dehydration which not only makes you feel unwell but can lead to preterm labour! For now, let's get to the tips on how to make sure you are drinking enough water!
3 Simple Solutions to Drinking Enough Water During Pregnancy
While you are pregnant you should be aiming for about 10 cups (2.3 Litres) of water every day. That is A LOT of water but don't worry! Here are 3 simple solutions to help you get every last drop.
1. Herbal Tea & Fruit Infusions
Did you know that drinking caffeine free tea counts towards your daily water intake? Yup! It does. Phew! Sometimes plain water is just not appetizing - especially when you are supposed to be drinking so much every day. Why not try adding fruit slices or a pregnancy-safe herbal tea into the mix to help you keep up with your new drinking habit?
2. Eating your water
When you are pregnant you tend to be hungry all the time so why not check two things off the list at once by eating something that is high in water content? Soups are an easy choice as are fruits and veggies. CLICK HERE for a great list of foods with high water content for your snacking pleasures!
3. Challenge yourself!
If you set your mind to it, you can definitely down 2 liters of water each day. Make it a fun personal challenge! Have you heard of water scheduling? In a nutshell, you get a honkin' big bottle (*ahem* about 2 liters would be great!) and mark it up with time increments so you make sure you are drinking a little bit every hour throughout the day!
