Have you thought about what happens AFTER birth?

Healing and finding balance. 

Too often we think about “bouncing back” from pregnancy, ignoring the important new changes to our bodies and lives.  You have created a whole tiny human, birthed that baby, and the life changes keep on rollin' in as you and your family adjust to your new roles and family dynamic.  This is big stuff, friends. 

Slow the *F* down.

For some reason, after giving birth we have a notion that within days we should be able to jump right back into life as it was before birth and baby.  Why?!  Give yourself some time and space to rest and recover.

Let's be real here for a minute, O.K.?  There is no going back, friends. You have some serious healing to do - even if your birth was "text book" and physically you feel great!  Your body has given so much to your tiny human during pregnancy and you need to replenish and find a new way forward. 

The 4th Trimester

Whatever you want to call it, the weeks and months after giving birth are an important period of time for you, your baby, and your whole family. Just as you made space for learning and self care during your first three trimesters, giving yourself that same love and care during the first few months after birth is absolutely important!  So, what can you do to help yourself during that postpartum period?

1. Invest in some quality postpartum care products.

You don't need a whole lot of gadgets and fancy pants stuff after birth (though we are HUGE fans of Fridet the MomWasher for perineal care - it just makes sense!) but investing in some natural and effective care products can help make your recovery from birth a whole lot more comfortable. The Hello, Baby! shop (located downtown Peterborough) has a great selection of healing and self care products - come check them out!

2. Take a class! There is a lot to learn about postpartum wellness. 

Part of our Birth + Baby Prep School classes focuses on recovery from birth (vaginal and cesarean) because as birth parents ourselves, we know how important it is to know what is normal and when to reach out for help after birth. We also have some other amazing learning opportunities coming up at the Hello, Baby! hub if you want to plan ahead and make your postpartum recovery a little easier!

Keep it simple, silly!

Once Jill became a mom herself, she quickly realized that her much-loved habit of spending hours creating complicated recipes was not going to fly. She had to rework her love for cooking and passion for nutrition so that she could prioritize time with her family, and still enjoy delicious, nutritious foods.

And so, Health With Jill was born, based on the belief that simply vibrant health is attainable through great food, minus the gimmicks and guilt trips of the diet industry. 3 Simple Solutions for Drinking Enough Water During Pregnancy

If you have been following along, welcome back! This series of posts is all about taking good care of yourself during pregnancy.  Mind and body, making sure you are staying on top of your changing needs is really important for you and your baby!

Water & Why You Need It

Water is pretty important to our overall wellness and this is never more true than when you are pregnant.  Fun Fact! As much as 60% of the adult body is made up of water.  When you take into account that while you are pregnant your blood volume nearly doubles, you are housing your baby in an  amniotic fluid filled bubble, and your joints (cushioned by water) are working extra hard because your your growing belly, it is easy to see why drinking enough water during pregnancy is top of the "to do" list!

Most importantly, drinking enough water during pregnancy helps to avoid dehydration which not only makes you feel unwell but can lead to preterm labour!  If you are looking for more info on the Red Flags you want to avoid during pregnancy, check out our Prenatal Education Class. For now, let's get to the tips on how to make sure you are drinking enough water!

3 Simple Solutions to Drinking Enough Water During Pregnancy

While you are pregnant you should be aiming for about 10 cups (2.3 Litres) of water every day.  That is A LOT of water but don't worry!  Here are 3 simple solutions to help you get every last drop.

1. Herbal Tea & Fruit Infusions

Did you know that drinking caffeine free tea counts towards your daily water intake?  Yup! It does.  Phew!  Sometimes plain water is just not appetizing - especially when you are supposed to be drinking so much every day.  Why not try adding fruit slices or a pregnancy-safe herbal tea into the mix to help you keep up with your new drinking habit?

2. Eating your water

When you are pregnant you tend to be hungry all the time so why not check two things off the list at once by eating something that is high in water content?  Soups are an easy choice as are fruits and veggies.  CLICK HERE for a great list of foods with high water content for your snacking pleasures!

3. Challenge yourself!

If you set your mind to it, you can definitely down 2 liters of water each day. Make it a fun personal challenge!  Have you heard of water scheduling?  In a nutshell, you get a honkin' big bottle (*ahem* about 2 liters would be great!) and mark it up with time increments so you make sure you are drinking a little bit every hour throughout the day!  Want to try it?  Check out this great post by Modernly Morgan all about water scheduling.
